ABOUT THE BREED
Norwegian Forest Cats, also known as Skogkatt or Wegies, are a naturally occurring breed in Scandinavia.
Mentioned in mythology, two large white Forest Cats were supposed to draw Freya’s chariot’ Also called Huldrekatt and Troll cats, as they had the reputation of being able to scare away Trolls.
Over the centuries, they have developed insulating, waterproof coats, “snowshoes” to protect their feet and are superbly adapted to withstand harsh surroundings. Despite their “wild” look, they have proved very adaptable to life in homes throughout the world, showing themselves to be friendly and undemanding companions.
Nowadays the breed is very popular because of its endearing character and robust physique, as well as its handsome good looks. Unlike many other breeds, this cat has scarcely changed its looks over the years and this particularly attracted me to the breed. My first two cats were both silver tabbies with white and this colour is still my favourite, although I breed kittens in other colours as well – we had our first red/silver tortie tabby last year!
My cats live in the home with permanent access to an enclosed garden, and this is the sort of home I prefer for my kittens. Unlike some breeds, these do love company so should not be left alone for long periods. |
